Vortex Tunnel - Halloween Ideas

Last Update: 02/18/2003

This year (2001) I’m aiming high and looking to build a Vortex tunnel. When I first saw one of these tunnels depicted on the web I thought it was too big of a project to take on. But after experiencing one of these tunnels first hand at a local Haunted House, I was so impressed with the effect that I just have to see if I can build one.

I’ve searched the web and found many different pictures, haunted attractions, and companies dealing with these beasts. I’ve seen different names used for the tunnel...black hole, spinning tunnel, rotating tunnel, and vortex tunnel. I placed pictures and links of the ones I came across. If you have others, please mail them to me and I’ll post them here.

How Not to Build a Spinning Tunnel

by Jeff Brown

Knott’s Halloween Haunt

The spinning tunnel.

Virtual-Vekkula

The walls and the lights rotate around you in this tunnel (like having your typical saturday night). The walkway is stationary but you feel like falling down. You can bypass the tunnel if it actually happens to be your typical saturday night.

If it's a dizzying experience you're after, then nothing delivers like the GyroTunnel. You walk through a completely enclosed cylinder, revolving at a stomach-lurching four rpm. With all your peripheral vision occupied by the slow rotation, you're no longer sure whether it's the tunnel that's doing the turning ... or you! The effect, to say the least, is disorientating!

How To Build a Vortex Tunnel

The vortex tunnel illusion is put together in three parts. The first part is the frame that supports the tunnel. This is made up of metal U- joists bolted together.

Haunted Haven

Spinning Tunnel Effect $3000. Includes 4 black lights mounted to bridge. painted in flourescent spiral pattern 4 colors.

The Knott's Berry Farm

Snoopy's 50th Birthday.

This is a picture of a spinning tunnel in motion. The shell is fabric, but the entire structure and bridge is steel and aluminum. This piece was featured in the Tunnel of Terror, a haunted house put on by a local pop radio station: Z100. It is designed to be easily assembled - disassembled for mobile or temporary events. This is not for the weak of heart... or stomach.
